What is dental anxiety?

Dental anxiety is fear, anxiety or stress associated with visiting the dentist or receiving dental treatment. Being scared to visit the dentist can result in delaying or avoiding dental treatment which is detrimental to your dental and general health. There are many triggers for those who are anxious about dental visits including things like needles, drills or the dental setting in general.

What is the difference between dental anxiety and dental phobia?

Dental anxiety ranges from mild uneasiness (experienced by many of us), to acute anxiety and even panic attacks.

Dental phobia is when a person will not visit the dentist despite needing treatment or being in pain.

How Green Room Dentistry treats those with dental anxiety or phobia

At Green Room Dentistry we have a welcoming and friendly team to support you with your dental visits and treatment. The setting and the practice are tranquil, spacious and calming. We understand how difficult it can be to make that first call and book an appointment to visit us. It is a huge step and we appreciate you trusting us to take that step with you. Please let us know how you feel and what your fears are so we can support you.

At your initial dental health assessment there are no surprises! We like to think of this as a chance to get to know each other.

All treatment is taken at your pace whilst explaining everything to you every step of the way. We know some of you prefer not to know, so if this is a better solution for you, we can adapt accordingly.

Solutions for Dental Anxiety

Over the years we have found the best way to help you regain your confidence is how we plan and carry out your treatment:

  • If you are in pain we look for the shortest and simplest way to get you comfortable.
  • We then work through the plan with preventive measures first so you have the knowledge to care for your mouth and teeth and limit further issues.
  • As your confidence grows we can tackle more complex procedures.
  • We are masterful at giving injections to make your treatment painless. A numbing gel is rubbed in first and this really helps.
  • You are always in control. If you need a break, want to sit up, get a glass of water or use the bathroom you can. Our nursing team are highly attentive and your wellbeing is paramount.
  • If all of the above is not enough we can prescribe sedation. You take a sedative, usually Temazepam, the night before and again an hour before your appointment. This works wonders and has allowed many of our patients to have treatment they desperately wanted but simply could face.
